Before I even get started on this, let me say that the best place for you to get good information is your pediatrician. The question today is the same as it was years ago. Maybe with a different answer. It’s baby shoes. Should I put shoes on my baby?
Years ago we were told that baby had to have shoes to support the feet and leg muscles. Today we are told to let babies go without shoes as much as possible to encourage the foot and let muscles to strength naturally. At this age, the main reason for shoes is to keep baby’s feet warm or maybe to complete the fashion outfit that they are wearing on that day. Then of course, there are times that baby really does need to wear shoes. Like walking on rocky ground, or hot sidewalks, or maybe a yard that has stickers in it. This wearing of shoes is mainly to keep baby comfortable.
There are what the manufactures call “crib shoes”. These are just for show and warmth. They are usually made of fabric or some other soft material. Usually these types of shoes are worn until the baby is 3-6 months old. After this
age, you will want to purchase flexible shoes. These type of shoes let your baby have plenty of foot movement. You can find them in many different styles and colors.
Unliket it will be when baby is older, babies do not usually wear out shoes. They outgrow them. You can expect to purchase shoes for your baby every few months. Babies grow in spurts.
My mother has my first baby shoes stored in a special box with my baby book. My paternal grandmother had all of her children’s first shoes bronzed. Infant shoes in addition to being adorable and holding sentimental value also have a practical purpose. They protect your child’s feet as they begin to crawl, climb and walk.
When purchasing infant shoes you should consider several factors. For a younger baby just learning to crawl and pull themselves up on the furniture, you should purchase soft soled shoes that have greater flexibility. Since your children grow rapidly, buy shoes with some wiggle room so developing feet aren’t pinched and squished. For infants beginning to walk, look for shoes with slip-resistant soles for fewer tumbles on smooth surfaces. Finally, invest in a good pair of leather shoes because they are durable and let your infant’s feet breathe in the summer and stay toastier during the winter.
