Blankets for Summer

Just because it’s hot outside, baby still needs a blanket.  The baby blanket should be light.

Remember how when you rest or don’t move for awhile, it always seem to get cooler?  This is because you are not using much energy and this is the same for baby, especially a new baby.  Most of us have air conditioning in our homes, thus providing our homes with a constant temperature.  This makes it easy to decide how to dress baby.  Don’t get carried away, just use a light weight blanket.  Like a soft cotton or maybe a knit blanket.  You know, like what we used to call a receiving blanket back in the old days.  Today it is called a swaddling blanket.  Baby will sleep better if he/she is not to hot or to cool.

Great Towels

I remember years back when I maybe wanted to do something a little unconventional my mother would say “Sandra, you can’t do that”  My comeback was always “what law says I can’t”.  Well there is no law that says what you must use for a towel.  I know that the large stores have given a great amount of room for the conventional “towel”.

Babies do not care what you use as long as it is soft and comfy to their soft skin.  For the very new baby, I think the greatest towel is not really a towel at all, but a soft knit blanket.  After a bath what could be more comfortable than being swaddled in a soft warm knit blanket.  These type of blankets come in all sizes and colors.  Some of then even have a “hood”.  In fact, many of these type of blankets are labeled as “hooded towels” depending on where you purchase them.  Many specialty stores even personalize them for you.  Knit blankets are inexpensive too.  They do double duty for you and baby.

A Sense of Security

During their formative years of development, young children cling dearly to a blanket. Change occurs rapidly in the life of an infant, and a lot of it can be difficult to process. New sights, sounds and sensations are being experienced every day, and it’s nice to have the comforting reassurance of a baby blanket. Young children count on these blankets to be waiting in their cribs, and parents are often obliged to make sure to have a security blanket at the ready.

Even months after a baby shower, a swaddling blanket still makes a great gift. New mothers appreciate access to a stockpile of blankets, especially since they require constant cleaning. Most babies go through a stage in which they spit up constantly, and blankets get the brunt of it. Once the child has outgrown it, a blanket can be passed down to baby brothers or sisters.

When it comes to our babies, we only want the most comfortable, safest items we can find. We don’t want anything that could cause them harm or even mild discomfort. Organic swaddle blankets help keep our babies warm and snug. And because they are made from organically grown material, we can be assured that no toxins or chemicals were used in the manufacturing process. This makes it completely non-toxic and reliable for infant use.

Your baby is guaranteed a good night’s rest when swaddled in an organic baby blanket. Swaddling has been used for hundreds of years to soothe and coddle distraught children, and now you can participate in this age long practice without exposing your child to chemicals.

Baby Blankets

Baby blankets are on the must have list when you are having a baby.  A blanket can provide security as well as keeping the baby warm.  Baby blankets come in 3 types: the swaddle, the sleep sack, or the flat blanket.

When you are purchasing either of these styles, keep in mind the room temperature where you will use this blanket.  Babies will get warmer faster than adults.  If the baby is born in the warmer months or you live in a warmer climate think about blankets that are made from natural fibers.  Such as cotton.  Also consider using this style of blanket in the stroller or car seat.

Sleep sacks are recommended by the Consumer Products Safety Commission for sleeping.  These too come in different fabrics colors and prints and weights.  The same applies to these as the flat blanket.

Swaddling Baby

After nine months of being so secure in a Mother’s womb, a baby is dumped out into this cold world.  No wonder the first thing it does is cry.  To comfort the baby, we turn to Swaddling.  What is swaddling”   Well, it all comes down to making your baby feel secure.  It’s wrapping your baby in a baby blanket that will keep him/her warm and comfortable.

How to Swaddle:  Using a light weight baby blanket of moderate size (about 16 X 16 inches), spread the blanket out flat, on a diagonal.  Fold down the top corner.  Place the baby on the blanket, with its head above the fold.  Fold one corner across the body and tuck it in under baby’s back.  Next fold the other side over the baby and wrap it around him/her.  Pull the blanket up under the chin, leaving the face uncovered.  Some babies are more comfortable with their little hands out.  You can wrap the baby blanket under the arms if  this makes your baby more content.

Swaddling is said to simulate the warmth of the womb.  Helps baby sleep well. Calms a colicky baby and it is easy to carry baby.

Organic Swaddle Blanket

March 16, 2010

The age old practice of mothers wrapping their infants in an organic swaddle blanket was practiced to prevent any movement of the infant’s limbs. Swaddling bands were often used to further restrict the infant. It was commonly believed that this was essential for the infants to develop proper posture.

While the practice fell out of favor a couple of hundred years ago, swaddle blankets have again become popular in the past 3 decades or so as modern medical studies indicate that swaddling assists babies in falling asleep, and helping them to remain asleep all night long.
